For you information we have listed a selection of semi-precious stones with some interesting facts relating to their origin, names and some beliefs. For example, Garnet, like many red stones was once believed to stop bleeding.

Carnelian Image

Carnelian

The stone was named “Carnelian” after the colour of the kornel cherry and can range in colour from translucent to semi-opaque. The prominent colours are red, orange-red, and brownish chalcedony. In Medieval times carnelian rings were carved with royal crests and used for sealing important letters, as wax does not stick to carnelian. Carnelian is supposed to protect against bad temper.

Opal is a relatively soft stone so it can chip or crack if not treated with care. Opal is said to be the good luck stone of love, but only for faithful lovers. For the unfaithful lovers opal brings bad fortune. Opal contains water, which makes it sensitive to heat, and it is the water trapped in the layers that give the colour play associated with this stone.

Amethyst is the most precious stone of the quartz family. Its colour range varies from pale lilac to deep purple. Its name is derived from the Greek word methystos which means “not drunken”. It was named after the Greek mythological maiden who was turned to stone by the God Dionysus and is characterised by vivid colours.

Many natural Abalone Shells are collected from the Pacific Ocean. With beautiful iridescent colours in shades of bluegreen, silver and pink. Abalone Shells are composed primarily of calcium carbonate, which has been deposited in thin overlapping layers. Reflected light from these layers causes the colourful iridescence.
